We don’t yet have the ability to board a spaceship and reach the sun or any other celestial body to study its properties All we have is light — radiated, reflected and distorted That light, or whatever is left of it by the time it reaches us, is enough for us to reach all sorts of conclusions about the object emitting it.
In this context, Rosa Khayrullina aims to figure out what she is Not just ceasing to be a Russian actress, but to disincarnate, to stop being human at all and instead become an object of inanimate nature, a stone, an installation To become an object of observation, or even of contemplation To an outside observer, she is the totality of information radiated by the internet upon searching “Rosa Khayrullina ” That information becomes the symbolic body and main material in Benefit Performance for Rosa Khayrullina.
Before the final shows on the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre, Rosa will spend 6 days in full view of the audience working with fragments from her own roles and with her symbolic body, renouncing any image of herself that is not actually her This series of performances will form the source material for what will take place onstage during the shows themselves — that which we customarily call a play
